The Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, is a regional union of fifteen West African countries. Founded in 1975, ECOWAS was created with the goals of promoting economic cooperation and integration throughout the region and fostering member states’ self-sufficiency. Since its inception, ECOWAS has grown to be a powerful force in Africa and expanded its scope to include such diverse operations as military peacekeeping and motor vehicle insurance. Given the high population and economic output of the combined ECOWAS territories, the success of ECOWAS programs, and the relative stability of its member states, the community is considered to be at the forefront of African international relations. Delegates in this assembly style committee will be tasked with guiding ECOWAS and its member states into the new decade with the hopes of creating a bright future for this rapidly developing region.
The Economic Community of West African States is a GA-style specialized committee. While crisis notes are not allowed, delegates should be prepared to respond to crisis-style updates throughout committee sessions. Position papers are required.
