UN COMMITTEE ON THE PEACEFUL USES OF OUTER SPACE (COPUOS)
DIRECTOR: ALYSSA MORFORD AND EDDY GELWASSER |
The COPUOS was created in 1959 to help facilitate and organize the exploration of space, taking advantage of all its opportunities for peace, security, and development. The committee sees international cooperation in space as having the utmost importance. Whether it be furthering space exploration, space research, or legal cooperation, the COPUOS is the problem solving body for UN-related space issues and space opportunities. After establishing the five treaties and five principles of outer space, the COPUOS now moves forward in managing the evolving space agenda.
This committee within GatorMUN will have the opportunity to discuss Space 2030 - what space exploration and research means through the lens of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and/or defining ownership in the final frontier of space. The first topic relates directly to the COPUOS 2021 agenda as viewing space exploration sustainably is important for long-term success of the planet and beyond. Topic two discusses an ongoing legal issue of the complex world of what ownership means and how or if property rights can/should exist in space.
This is a dual delegation committee. |
