Executive Yuan of Taiwan, 2019 Director: Charles Sherwood
For many years, Taiwan has survived as a distinct entity under heavy U.S. and Chinese influence. Formed from the aftermath of the Chinese Civil War in 1949, the island nation has gradually transformed itself from a Cold War-era military dictatorship into a vibrant democracy that sustains one of the most advanced economies in Asia. However, recent years have brought unique challenges and opportunities for the small island nation. The People’s Republic of China has been exerting renewed military and diplomatic pressures on the island. Meanwhile, the Taiwanese population has begun to see itself as an independent cultural and political group, distinct from mainland China. It is the duty of the Taiwanese Executive Yuan to ensure that Taiwan can survive and thrive on its path to becoming an independent nation.
