The United Nations Economic and Social Council was established in 1945 as the principal body to coordinate dialogues, review policies, and formulate recommendations on economic, social, and environmental issues, as well as for the implementation of the internationally agreed development goals. As one of the main six organs of the United Nations, ECOSOC is the central platform for fostering debate and innovative thinking and forging consensus on ways forward on annual themes of global importance to sustainable development. For this year, the topics are Freedom of Information and Access to Medicine. ECOSOC wants to strive for global accessibility to information without overpower one’s country sovereignty. Furthermore, as new medical issues emerges, the committee will have opportunities to explore the pharmaceutical world, as well as its functionality in different countries.
